FiiO

A Guangzhou company founded by ex-BBK engineers that took the top five portable-player slots in Japan's biggest audio retailer — and is pushing into cassette and CD players while everyone else abandons them

Active — FiiO (广州飞傲电子科技有限公司, Guangzhou FiiO Electronics Technology Co., Ltd.) is a privately held Chinese audio manufacturer incorporated on 19 April 2007 and based in Baiyun District, Guangzhou. It makes portable music players, headphone amplifiers and DACs, in-ear monitors, desktop audio and — unusually — cassette and CD players. It is not publicly listed. In the Japanese retailer e-earphone's 2025 annual rankings, FiiO products took all five top spots in portable players by unit sales, and the FiiO M27 was the best-selling player by revenue, ahead of Astell&Kern's flagship.

FiiO is registered as 广州飞傲电子科技有限公司, incorporated on 19 April 2007, with its registered address in Baiyun District, Guangzhou. It is a privately held limited liability company and is not listed on any exchange.

The company's origin in BBK is now directly sourced rather than merely "generally described." A 2026 feature published by the Baiyun district's own media outlet states it without hedging: 飞傲电子的创业团队源自步步高公司。2007年,几位从步步高公司出来的音频工程师创立飞傲电子,选择便携HiFi音频设备这一小众市场创业 — "FiiO Electronics' founding team originated from BBK. In 2007, several audio engineers who came out of BBK founded FiiO Electronics, choosing the niche market of portable HiFi audio." BBK is the Chinese consumer-electronics group behind the Oppo, Vivo and OnePlus phone brands.

The founder's own account, given to TechPowerUp in 2024, does not mention BBK: he describes being invited to work as a consultant at a friend's company, proposing a docking speaker for the popular Meizu M6 player, having Meizu cancel the project, and starting FiiO to sell the resulting stock himself. The two accounts are not necessarily in conflict — one is about where the people came from, the other about the particular product that started the business — and this entry now treats the BBK origin as established. FiiO began life as an accessories company rather than an audio brand. The turn came with the E3, a portable headphone amplifier that sold well in Europe and the United States and convinced the founders that there was a market for a Chinese company selling serious portable audio abroad. The same Baiyun account puts the decisive turning point later, at 2013, when the X3 player — described in the original as shaped like a gas stove — broke through overseas before selling at home.

Which part of BBK, and what happened to it. The phrase "came out of BBK" needs unpacking, because BBK by 2007 was no longer one company. Duan Yongping founded it in Dongguan in 1995 and split it in 1999 into three independent businesses with separate legal, financial and personnel structures: Chen Mingyong took the audiovisual arm, Shen Wei the communications arm, and Jin Zhijiang the educational arm. Those became OPPO, vivo and BBK Educational Electronics respectively [13].

That places FiiO precisely. Its founders came out of the audiovisual division — the OPPO line — rather than from a single monolithic BBK, which is why accounts variously say "from BBK" and "from OPPO" without contradicting each other. The founder says so himself: in a Weibo post he described the seven years there as the most important of his working life, that he remains a small shareholder in the companies he left, and that FiiO's culture is copied from the BBK that Duan founded [13]. He has also said that Chen Mingyong interviewed him personally, and that Duan Yongping walked past mid-interview and joked that Chen was poaching staff again.

BBK the parent is gone: Guangdong BBK Electronics Industry Co., Ltd. completed deregistration on 7 April 2023 [13]. The brands it spun off did not.

The brand name is built from the words it serves: "Fi" from hi-fi, and "iO" for the digital ones and zeros. The Chinese name 飞傲 is a near-homophone.

One oddity, now resolved. The founder was for years publicly known only as "James," and an earlier version of this entry said Chinese-language press had never published his Chinese name. That is no longer true, and the name is now on the record from FiiO's own channels: 钟志宏, English name James Zhong. FiiO's Japanese distributor published a partnership release in August 2024 giving the counterparty as "Guangzhou FiiO Electronics Technology Co., Ltd. (CEO 鐘 志宏, English name: James Zhong)", and the accompanying photograph is captioned with him meeting the distributor's president. Both the simplified (钟) and traditional (鐘) forms appear depending on the outlet.

On the romanisation: TechPowerUp's interview is titled "Interview with James Chung (FiiO Founder)," and "Chung" is a legitimate Cantonese romanisation of the surname 钟. But the company's own English name uses the Mandarin form, Zhong, and this entry follows the company. The earlier reasoning — that a 钟姓 shareholder with the largest stake was probably him — turns out to have been correct. The entry withheld it at the time because no source confirmed it. That was the right call then, and it is settled now.

FiiO's chief executive is James Zhong (钟志宏) — FiiO's own 2024 releases name him as CEO. An earlier version of this entry concluded the opposite, from a 2020 interview that referred to the chief executive as 张工: this reading took "张工" for a full name, when it is more likely an honorific ("Engineer Zhang") and in any case the company's own releases supersede it. A 2026 Baiyun district feature separately quotes 陈俊铭 (Chen Junming) as the company's 总经理, general manager — a different post from the CEO, and a person this entry had not previously named. The lesson is the same one the founder's name taught: registry and interview records are thin here, and the company's own statements are the better source.

FiiO's product range is unusually wide. It makes portable digital audio players in the M and X series, portable DAC and headphone amplifiers, Bluetooth receivers and ear hooks, USB dongles, desktop DAC/amps and streamers, active speakers, in-ear monitors, over-ear headphones and true-wireless earbuds. It also sells sub-brands at different price points: JadeAudio (翡声) for value-focused direct sales, and Snowsky (雪漫天), introduced in 2024, aimed at a younger market.

The most distinctive thing about the range is retro hardware. FiiO makes cassette players, CD players, vinyl equipment and discrete R2R DACs at a time when most of the industry has abandoned those formats — a positioning that a 2026 Guangzhou municipal business feature described as possibly unique among audio companies worldwide.

FiiO occupies a self-owned industrial park in Baiyun District, occupied since 2022, covering about 15,000 square metres and housing research, manufacturing and marketing. It reported more than 300 employees in 2024, with a core R&D team of over 150, and a manufacturing centre of about 8,000 square metres with four assembly lines and capacity of up to two million units a year. Its test equipment includes Audio Precision analyzers, an anechoic chamber and RF test facilities. Its revenue was reported at about RMB 160 million in 2023 — roughly US$22 million — which makes it a small company by revenue and a disproportionately influential one by reputation. Export value for January to November 2025 was reported at RMB 180 million, up 33 per cent year on year, with more than 90 per cent of exports sold under its own brand across 60-plus countries.

FiiO is not owned by any larger group. No parent company was found, and there is a same-name trap worth flagging: a stock quote exists for "飞傲国际" under ticker 869468, but that entity is Fuzhou FiiO International Trading Co., Ltd., on a regional equity exchange — a different and unrelated company.

Lineage — where the name went

The origin story runs back to one Chinese electronics giant, and that link is now directly sourced rather than inferred: the Baiyun district's own media outlet states that FiiO's founding team came out of BBK in 2007. The earlier version of this entry had to record a discrepancy, because the founder's only long interview describes a cancelled Meizu accessory project and names no former employer. Both strands are now in the tree, with the BBK edge treated as established. Three names were wrong or missing here and are corrected: the founder and CEO is James Zhong (钟志宏), not "James Chung"; the 2020 interview's "张工" is better read as an honorific than a full name, since the company's own releases name James Zhong as CEO; and the general manager, 陈俊铭 (Chen Junming), was not in this graph at all.

  1. James Zhong served under BBK Electronics (rose to head of R&D before leaving)
  2. Zhang Gong served under BBK Electronics (came out of BBK's audio division)
  3. 2007 — James Zhong founded FiiO
  4. Zhang Gong founded FiiO (co-founder, later chief executive)
  5. BBK Electronics was ancestor of FiiO (the founders' shared origin)
  6. 1995 — Duan Yongping founded BBK Electronics (in Dongguan; Duan Yongping)
  7. 1999 — BBK Electronics spun off OPPO (the audiovisual arm, split out with its own legal and financial structure)
  8. 2004 — Chen Mingyong founded OPPO (took the audiovisual business after the three-way split)
  9. James Zhong served under OPPO (seven years in BBK's audiovisual division, the line that became OPPO)
  10. 2007 — FiiO created The FiiO E5 (the first product)
  11. FiiO created The FiiO E3 (the amplifier that established the brand abroad)
